The valuable lessons instilled in Maemi Carrillo is something she will always treasure thanks to the Catholic school education she has received. Now entering the eighth-grade at St. Gerard Majella School in Paterson, Carrillo believes the school has helped her become a better student and has shaped her into the person she is today. She is also grateful to learn in a safe and friendly environment.
“The thing I like most about St. Gerard Majella School is the people,” said Carrillo, “Not only my classmates but the faculty too. I have been able to form many friendships and I am fortunate enough to have caring teachers who push me to become a better student and strive for my dreams.”
The school which is under the leadership of Filippini Sister Jo-Ann Pompa, principal, is the only Catholic school in the city of Paterson. It provides Catholic values while teaching its students to achieve academic excellence. Carrillo said, “The rest of the faculty are constantly working hard to ensure that the school runs smoothly. Sister Jo-Ann has also accompanied me throughout my academic career and has encouraged me to persevere and achieve great things.”
Attending St. Gerard’s since she was a small child, Carrillo has many fond memories at the school. One experience she won’t forget is the Walk-A-Thon that the school hosts. She said, “I loved that it was something that all of the school could partake in. We were also able to appreciate our local community. I definitely think that experience brought us all closer together.”
As she enters her final year at the school, Carrillo is thinking about some possible future career goals. “I have always been interested in software development and graphic design. My dream is to be able to work in a large tech company and use my job as a creative outlet,” said Carrillo.
With much appreciation to all those who have shown stewardship to St. Gerard’s, Carrillo said, “Throughout my entire time at St. Gerard School, there have always been people who have helped support us. They have contributed their time, money, and support to help us. It is because of these people that we are able to enjoy new experiences and receive great opportunities. To all these people, I would like to say thank you for your support. We wouldn't be where we are today without all of your care and love.”
