      Bull Of Indiction
      • Hope Does Not Disappoint

A Jubilee is proclaimed through an official papal (or Pontifical) “Bull of Indiction”. The “Bull” is generally written in Latin and bears the seal of the Pope. But why is it called the “Bull”? Read this short, fascinating article to learn more!

Each Jubilee “Bull” is identified by its initial words. For example, Saint John Paul II proclaimed the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 with the Bull Incarnationis Mysterium: The Mystery of the Incarnation. Pope Francis proclaimed the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015 with the Bull Misericordiae vultus: The face of mercy.

SPES NON CONFUNDIT. “Hope does not disappoint” (Rom 5:5). – These are the first words of the Bull for the Jubilee Year 2025. Here are a few lines from the first section:

Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring.

Even so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt.

Often we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness. For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope. God’s word helps us find reasons for that hope.

      • 2025 Jubilee Prayer

        Father in heaven,
may the faith you have given us
in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled
in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom.

        May your grace transform us
into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
        in the sure expectation
of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,
        your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
        May that same grace spread
the joy and peace of our Redeemer
        throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed,
be glory and praise for ever.
        Amen

      Jubilee Indulgence
      • Indulgences

Pope Francis stated in his February 2022 letter announcing the Jubilee 2025:

"We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire..."

        From the Decree:

“the indulgence is a way of discovering the unlimited nature of God’s mercy. Not by chance, for the ancients, the terms ‘mercy’ and ‘indulgence’ were interchangeable, as expressions of the fullness of God’s forgiveness, which knows no bounds” (Spes non confundit, 23).

The Indulgence, therefore, is a Jubilee grace.

What else can I know about Indulgences and how can I obtain this grace for myself and others during the Jubilee Year 2025?

      Local Designated Jubilee Sites
      • What is a "Designated Jubilee Site"

It is the diocesan Cathedral, another church, or sacred place designated by the Bishop for the Jubilee Year of Hope.

        Why?

As Pope Francis states in his Bull of Indiction: “The faithful, pilgrims of hope, will be able to obtain the Jubilee Indulgence granted by the Holy Father if they undertake a pious pilgrimage… to any sacred Jubilee site…” to gain a plenary indulgence for yourself or a deceased one.

In the Diocese of Paterson, there are five local designated Jubilee sites:

        1. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Paterson
        2. Shrine of St. Joseph, Stirling
        3. St. Luke Church, Long Valley
        4. St. James the Greater, Montague
        5. St. Bernard Church, Wharton

Throughout the Jubilee Year, these sites will be available for your pilgrimage. The faithful are especially encouraged to visit during Lent.  Click here for more information.

One day events, a local pilgrimage with Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney, are also scheduled. Click here for dates and times.

      2024 Year of Prayer
      • 2024 - Year of Prayer

From now on, I am happy to think that the year 2024 preceding the Jubilee event of 2025 will be dedicated to a great ‘symphony’ of prayer, first of all, to recover the desire to be in the presence of the Lord, to listen to him and adore him.   - Pope Francis

Pope Francis has asked that 2024 be a Year of Prayer .  The Holy Father announced its launch on Sunday January 21, 2024, on the fifth annual celebration of The Sunday of the Word of God.

In preparation for the Jubilee Year of Hope beginning this December 2024, every diocese is invited to promote the centrality of individual and community prayer during these 12 months.
"Teach Us to Pray" is an easy-to-read, inspiring, concrete and practical guide for anyone looking to deepen his/her prayer life and relationship with Jesus, family, and others.
