The closing of its physical building during the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t prevented DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne from springing into action to help the local efforts of medical personnel and other first-responders fight the spread of COVID-19 and care for patients, who have been infected. DePaul has been putting into practice lessons of faith from school about lending a hand to people in need largely by leveraging the power of technology and the charity of their tight-knit community.

Bishop Serratelli celebrated Mass for Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion at St. Paul’s Inside the Walls: The Catholic Center for Evangelization at Bayley-Ellard in Madison April 5. The Mass was live-streamed for all in the Diocese to see via Facebook. During his homily, the Bishop said, “So today, separated physically but united by the love of Christ crucified, we join the crowds in Jerusalem and we cry out, ‘Hosanna to the son of David, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ Blessed is he who comes to save us and he will.”

Father Leo Patalinghug adds just a splash of vodka to a pan with the sauce of one of his signature dishes: penne vodka. He adds another splash of vodka and then another until — “whoosh!” — the contents of the pan, under heat, erupt into flame. An audience of 200 people in the hall at Corpus Christi Parish in Chatham Township gasp with surprise and laugh with delight, as the vodka in the sauce burns off and the flame dies out.

With New York City’s five boroughs, only miles away from the Paterson Diocese, now the epicenter of the U.S. coronavirus outbreak, there has been a dire need for personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves and gowns in hospitals in the area. Concerned for the safety of essential workers at these hospitals, a group of Salesian Sisters took to their sewing machines and have been working diligently to make masks.

Now more than ever, Straight and Narrow’s mission to serve those dealing with addiction is crucial as the agency overcomes two health crises — an epidemic inside a pandemic. Straight and Narrow (SN), an agency of diocesan Catholic Charities, the longest-running community-based residential treatment facility for drugs and alcohol in the state, continues to be operational during the pandemic. Its work is considered essential and vital for the wellbeing of clients. However, its early childhood education centers, which partner with Paterson Public Schools, are closed by state mandate until at least April 30.

If there’s one thing that the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted to us Catholics, it’s how much our life revolves around the sacraments. Our priests are to be commended for their creative ideas and hard work in bringing Mass, reflections, and even humor to the faithful virtually. But we realize deep down in our hearts that it’s just not the same as in person. Physical presence is an essential ingredient for the sacramental life. We will explore this idea theologically, but it’s something we know by spiritual instinct.

St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Clifton is a special place for Kimberly Carey, a fifth- and sixth-grade science teacher. She went to the parish school there from kindergarten through eighth grade. She received her sacraments there and she always dreamed of having her wedding in St. Andrew the Apostle Church. Like so many couples all around the country and even around the world, that dream has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the state, Gov. Phil Murphy canceled all large gatherings, effective March 21, for the foreseeable future to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
