At the evening prayer service, Sister of Christian Charity Mary Edward Spohrer, provincial superior of the Sisters of Christian Charity in Mendham, who formerly served the Diocese as chancellor/delegate for religious, received the papal award, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, from Bishop Serratelli.

With one of the most diverse communities in the Paterson Diocese, St. Stephen Parish in Paterson marked Divine Mercy Sunday with a tri-lingual Mass celebrated in English, Polish and Spanish April 3. The feast was designated by St. John Paul II and has taken place on the Second Sunday of Easter since 2001. It is based on the diaries of a young Polish nun named St. Faustina Kowlaska and her encounters with Jesus, who presented himself to her as Divine Mercy during the 1930s.

The Catholic identity of Georgetown University — the country’s oldest Catholic university — is being called into question by Catholic leaders, alumni and organizations who are leveling criticism at the Jesuit-run institution for defending a student group’s invitation to have Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, speak there this month. Georgetown has defended the group’s right to invite the abortion advocate, though it said the invitation does not represent an endorsement on behalf of Georgetown.
